Reliure is the art of hand bookbinding. At Spisherbocker Books, we create hand bound journals and offer workshops to teach a variety of basic bookbinding techniques. Our workshops vary by age, starting out with the simplest of bindings for preschoolers, up to more complicated sewn bindings for adults. Check the Events section of our page for upcoming workshops.

First Booklets for Little Fingers

Children ages 3-5 can learn how to make their first booklets. In this workshop, kids will learn rubber band binding techniques. No cutting or sewing required! They will come away with three different books; one concertina booklet, and two different pamphlet journals. These little books are wonderful for preschoolers to use as doodle books, field journals, sticker collections, and more! This workshop includes fun facts, storytime, and snacks!

Journals for Juniors

Children ages 6-9 can learn how to make their own journals. In this workshop, kids will use basic folding, cutting, and sewing techniques to build their books. They will come away with three different books; one concertina booklet, one rubber band pamphlet journals, and one ribbon pamphlet journal. These books are fun for first time journaling, scrapbooking, and sketching. This workshop includes fun facts, storytime, and snacks!

Basic Bookbinding

These workshops are built for ages 10 and up to learn the bare basics of bookbinding. Participants will learn a variety of styles including concertina books, pamphlets, and sewn hardbacks. Each event will vary, but participants will come away with two finished projects from their workshop. Finished pieces will be well-suited for journaling, scrapbooking, and sketching. These workshops are wonderful for older kids and adults, alike!

1.5 - 2 Hour workshop

$40-$50 per participant
